Buster's Texas Style BBQ

Five out of six piggies on 2008 through Sep, 2009

Overall impression...
Rib-licious!

Meats...
My favorite is the beef ribs. They are meaty, tender, and Flintstone-sized, with so much flavor that sauce is not really needed. So far, they are the best I've eaten in the Portland area.

The Baby Back ribs are also great. They have enough fat on them to be succulent and tasty, and are quite meaty.

The brisket has been fixed. It's juicy, tender, and delicious, although that varies. The pork loin is just a little smoky and tastes great. Also try the barbecued chicken, it's delicious! If you like heat, the hot links will not disappoint. They're a real blast.

Buster's chicken breast sandwich is boneless, skinless, smokeless, and flavorless.

As well as the usual BBQ offerings, the menu includes turkey, pork loin, and ham. Perfect for satisfying your every bbq mood.

Sides...
The list of sides is long, and includes beans, potato salad, cole slaw, rice, green beans, mashed potatoes, and baked potatoes. Great BBQ beans, with a slightly smoky flavor in a mildly sweet base. Add some hot sauce if it's too sweet for you. The cole slaw has a nice, earthy balance to it that I just love.

Sauces...
A weak lineup. At the salad bar is a sauce or dressing that caught my eye. But how could something called "Chipotle Mustard" be so profoundly bland? Fortunately, sauces aren't strictly necessary on the high quality, juicy meats.

Portions...
The portions are generous, and the menu includes a 2-meat combo and 3-meat combo, so even hearty eaters will be satisfied.

Service...
Buffet style. Friendly, courteous, and professional.

Cost...
Reasonable, especially considering the high quality and generous portions. Sandwiches with one side are around $7 and dinners with two sides are about $11. "Texas size" it for $6 more and one plate will satisfy two voracious BBQ enthusiasts.

Atmosphere...
Casual. Cafeteria style service. The kitchy western decor is both interesting and comfortable.

Pros...
Delicious, reasonably priced BBQ in a comfortable atmosphere, with three locations around town. There is a salad- and condiment-bar which is handy for extra sauce or jalapenos. Expansive menu. Consistent.

Cons...
Somewhat bland sauces.

I like Buster's quite a lot. I've eaten there enough times over the years to help them pay for opening new locations (LOL).
My favorite item on the menu are the spareribs. They're usually nicely smoked, tender and very flavorful. I believe they are one of the most consistent items on their menu.
I love the bbq beans, which has some jalepeno pepper in it. And I enjoy the coleslaw. The fries are good too. They could brush up on the toast a bit--it never has enough butter on it for my tastes.
I've known Steve and Buster for many years. I believe they do care about putting out a great product.
