Four out of six piggies on 2008 through Aug, 2009.
Overall Impression...
Delicious!
Meats...
Delicious has all the usual BBQ offerings, plus ribeye, "Texas" sausage, prime rib, pork loin, pork chops, game hens, and smoked turkey legs. The awesome pulled (actually chopped) pork is succulent, tender, and delicious. One time the pulled pork was mingling in the same warming tray as the chicken. The little bit of chicken fat made it the best dang pulled pork I've ever had! The pork spare ribs were smoky and flavorful, and very meaty. The sausage was perfectly cooked, succulent and unusually tender. It was not overwhelmingly fatty, like some. The smoked chicken is incredibly succulent, tender, and delicious. Unfortunately, the brisket was dry and chewy. Perhaps it was an "off" day for brisket.
Sides...
All the usual plus fried okra, sweet potatoes, smoked corn on the cob, greens, green beans, green salad, fruit platter, veggie platter, "LA gumbo", and buttered corn. The nicely balanced potato salad and the macaroni salad are tasty mayo- and mustard-based blends. The coleslaw is in a soupy mayo base, and lacks something to round the flavor. The "Texas beans" are less like BBQ beans and more like bean chili. They were overcooked, in a thick, cumin flavored base, but still tasted good. Bland corn bread comes with the platter. I tried dipping it into the sweet sauce, and it was great! See my discussion topic post about cornbread. The greens are awesomely savory, meaty, and earthy; yum! Bottled drinks are available, or bring your own water.
Update, Sep 2008. The Texas beans were perfectly cooked this time!
Sauces...
The one sauce is sweet and very slightly spicy. On my second visit to Delicious, I decided that, although the sauce is not perfectly balanced, and far from bold, it does complement the succulent meats. That's its job. Still, playing with different sauce and meat combinations is part of the fun of BBQ. The mild sauce happens to be perfect with the chicken, because it doesn't overwhelm it.
Portions...
Humongous! The platters come with one, two, or three meats. One is plenty for a ravenous barbecue enthusiast. Two is just too much, or fine for two people.
Service...
Pleasant, courteous, and fast. The staff seems proud of their work. There is no indoor seating. You pick up your order at the window.
Cost...
Inexpensive. The platter with one meat and two sides is $8. Bottled drinks are $2, or bring your own water.
Atmosphere...
Delicious Texas Pit BBQ is about the food, not the place. Actually, it's a shack! There is no indoor seating. The food is packaged in styrofoam and plastic utensils are provided. Delicious occupies a small corner of a parking lot. The smoker-on-wheels sits nearby. Most people get takeout, but there is a small, fenced-in, covered seating area outdoors. Plastic tables and chairs are on green plastic "grass". So, the atmosphere could be described as "airy". If you don't mind the traffic noise, on a day with good weather it's pleasant. Everything is scrupulously clean.
Pros...
Delicious BBQ at affordable prices. Expansive menu. Convenient takeout and catering.
Cons...
Some of the dishes need improving. Lack of sauces to choose from. Not a sitdown restaurant.
