Big Lou's Texas BBQ
Four out of six piggies on Jun, 2009.
Overall Impression...
It was definitely worth the trip and I can't wait to try other things on the menu!
Meats...
Tasty and tender brisket and delicious pulled pork highlight the meats at Big Lou's. However, the smoky beef ribs were just a bit tough and dry. Smoked chicken, wings, smoked meatloaf, pork ribs, sausage, and texas chili are also available.
Sides...
The corn bread, even though wrapped in plastic, was dry. The tasty cole slaw was chopped, not shredded, nicely crunchy, and accented by a bit of celery seed. Disappointed from the mild mayo-based potato salad and bland macaroni salad, I was happier with the thick and hearty "Texas" beans. They're good, but not at all spicy. Where's that Texas heat? Onion rings, baked potatoes, mac & cheese, fried okra, sweet potato fries, shoestring fries, and fresh corn on the cob are also available. Wow!
Sauces...
A complete lineup. The sauce I tried was a well rounded, thick, and slightly sweet delight. The spice sneaks up on you. Big Lou's dedicated pulled pork sauce is a well balanced, thin, hot, vinegary delight that does indeed accentuate the already delicious pulled pork flavor. Bravo! See Big Lou's web page (link below) for the complete sauce details.
Portions...
Generous.
Service...
Friendly, courteous, neighborly.
Cost...
Moderate. About average for high quality BBQ.
Atmosphere...
It's basically a BBQ shack in a parking lot, with covered patio. It's heated and has bench seating. The meals are served picnic style with paper plates and plastic utensils.
Pros...
Yummy meats. Expansive menu.
Cons...
Some sides need improvement. Picnic style.
